Understanding USCCA Membership Choices
Read the Real Story
The USCCA receives thousands of questions about what IS and is NOT covered under the self-defense liability insurance benefit that all members receive. We’re eliminating the guesswork for millions of gun-owning Americans, and giving you an unfiltered look at the complex reality of self-defense.
Get the REAL facts about some of the most publicized cases the USCCA has encountered over the years…
CASE #1
The Situation
The member joined the USCCA on August 27, 2018, just days before the incident.
On September 8, 2018, the member shot and killed her ex-husband.
The Facts
The insurance company provided $50,000 for her legal defense, based on initial evidence supporting her self-defense claim.
After receiving new evidence, the insurance company determined the incident was not a covered self-defense claim and discontinued coverage.
After a short jury deliberation, the member was convicted of second-degree murder and obstruction of justice.
The Outcome
The member filed a breach of contract lawsuit against the insurance company in federal court, claiming her coverage was wrongfully denied. The case was dismissed.
The member appealed her criminal conviction, but the Court of Appeals upheld both the conviction and the trial court’s rulings.
Contrary to false claims, the USCCA never dropped the member—her membership expired in July 2019.
CASE #2
The Situation
The member was forced to defend himself when assaulted at a mall.
The Facts
The Member selects an attorney of his choosing in his defense.
The jury finds the member not guilty of aggravated malicious wounding and using of a firearm in the commission of a felony, but convicted for discharging a firearm within a building.
The Outcome
The member is currently appealing the sole conviction utilizing an attorney recommended by the public defender, who is continuing to be paid by the insurance company, pursuant to his USCCA Member benefits.
The member continues to be an active USCCA Member.

The USCCA is not an insurance company. The policy is provided to the USCCA by Universal Fire and Casualty Insurance Company, and all USCCA Members receive self-defense liability insurance as an automatic benefit of their membership.

While there’s no such thing as an "average" self-defense case, a standard criminal defense trial after a self-defense incident takes months to prepare and weeks in court to defend. Based on the situation, location, and experience level of the attorney, rates can range from $300 to $1,000+ per hour. The self-defense liability policy benefit that all USCCA Members get has been utilized for thousands of incidents, paying out tens of millions of dollars worth of claims.
Take Brian’s story, for example. This member was forced to defend his family against a violent attacker, then went to prison for it and was charged with murder! With the help of his USCCA Membership — and $68,500 of legal fees later — all charges were dropped.
Read more TRUE member stories and see REAL case costs here.
To receive coverage, you must register as a member of the USCCA using your legal name. Residents of New Jersey, New York, and Washington are not eligible for membership, as we don’t operate there..
In addition to your benefits, certain family members — such as those related by blood, marriage, adoption, or minor children in your legal custody who live with you — are also automatic recipients of the policy benefits if an incident happens at your home. However, they’re not covered if the incident happens away from your home.
All USCCA Members automatically qualify to add a spouse to their membership at a 50% discount! visit FAQs from USCCA Members to see how to add them from your Member Dashboard.
As long as a USCCA Member and their attorney can argue self-defense as a justification in their case, and no other exclusions in the policy apply, the USCCA Member will be covered for their self-defense incident. For example, there is no coverage if a member claims self-defense while they were in the middle of committing a criminal act like armed robbery.
If you've been involved in a self-defense incident, your first call after 911 should be to the Critical Response Team. You will be connected with one of the Critical Response Team Case Managers, who are available 24/7/365.
Your Critical Response Team Case Manager will help guide you through the aftermath of a self-defense incident, connect you with an attorney (either of your choice or from the USCCA Pro-2A nationwide Attorney Network), and submit a report to UFCIC to begin your claim.
A USCCA Member’s self-defense liability insurance benefit can be triggered by ANY lawful act of self-defense, regardless of whether a firearm was used. This includes the legal use of pepper spray, tasers, and improvised defensive items. It’s important to note however that coverage is excluded if an insured uses a weapon they were not able to legally possess under federal law.

For USCCA Members there is NO LIMIT on defense expenses for the defense of a civil OR criminal proceeding (or investigation) of a covered self-defense incident. This includes but isn’t limited to expenses like attorney fees, court costs, court taxes, expert witnesses, private investigations, and digital crime scene reenactment.
All USCCA Members ALSO have access to up to $2,000,000 annually to pay for civil damages rendered against them. This means that if your attacker brings you to court looking for money, insurance coverage can pay any money the court may award him.
Additionally, USCCA Members receive a $250,000 allowance to cover the cost of bail expenses. A $2,500,000 bail bond typically costs $250,000 or 10% of the set bail. These funds can cover the costs of cash bail, bail bonds, and monitoring expenses.
USCCA Member benefits also expand well beyond these main coverages. Additional benefits of the policy include:
Up to $15,000 in attorney fees and expenses to defend against or challenge any extreme risk protection order (ERPO) or other similar government action.
Up to $20,000 for Incidental Expenses related to a covered incident, such as the cost to replace a confiscated firearm, and Additional Living Expenses.
Up to $10,000 to cover lost earnings if an incident prevents you from working for up to 30 days — whether due to injury or authorities restricting access to your workplace. This is in addition to the up to $750/day for loss of earnings due to missing work due to your covered case.
Up to $5,000 for attorney fees and expenses to expunge or seal records associated with a covered incident.
And more…
Read the full policy here for more coverage details.
Payments under this policy can end when a member receives a final, unappealable guilty conviction, if the member accepts a plea deal to a charge that qualifies as an “act of violence”, or if the $2 million limit for civil damages has been exhausted.
Yes, USCCA Members can choose their own attorney, OR they can choose from over 1,200 highly qualified pro-2A attorneys in the nationwide USCCA Attorney Network.
The Critical Response Team has direct access to these Network Attorneys 24/7 across the United States.

Residents of New Jersey, New York, and Washington are not eligible for membership, as we don’t operate there.

Kayla Giles Update & How USCCA Works Today
Statement from Tim Schmidt, Co-Founder & Chairman of the USCCA:
To the USCCA Family — our members, employees, instructors, and business partners:
From time to time, we face moments that test not only our mission but our unity, our integrity, and our resolve.
I would like to address directly the recent Louisiana Supreme Court ruling involving former USCCA member Kayla Giles. This case has drawn national attention and sparked heated conversation across the 2A community, in the media, and online. That’s why I believe it’s important to clarify what happened and where we stand.
In 2018, Kayla Giles shot her estranged husband in a Walmart parking lot during a child custody exchange. She had joined the USCCA just two weeks prior.
At the time, our then-insurance partner initially provided her with $50,000 in support for her legal defense. However, soon after, additional evidence came to light, including:
• Prior online searches related to harming her spouse
• Allegedly falsified a federal firearms form to obtain a handgun
• Obstructed justice (a charge Ms.Giles was convicted of) by attempting to destroy incriminating evidence on her computer
After consideration of the evidence, our insurance partner decided to deny further coverage.
Eventually, Ms. Giles was found guilty of second-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison. She was also found guilty of obstruction of justice and sentenced to a consecutive thirty years in prison. She appealed, and both convictions were upheld in the appellate court. She proceeded to sue the USCCA, and she lost the suit.
Fast forward to June 2025. The Louisiana Supreme Court has vacated Ms. Giles’ murder conviction. This ruling did not conclude that Ms. Giles acted in self-defense — it questioned the clarity of a jury instruction. The case has been remanded and will be retried in the lower court.
Regardless of public opinion, one thing is clear: this has been, and remains, a highly contested case in the 2A space. It raises real and valid questions about how self-defense cases are evaluated and how legal protections are applied.
This marked the beginning of a thorough examination of how our policy works and what responsibly armed Americans want. We took action. We changed our policy. We made a significant investment and obtained a majority stake in another insurance provider.
Today, USCCA Membership provides rock-solid protection for those who act in lawful self-defense. If a criminal defense attorney is willing to argue self-defense — and a judge agrees to hear it — our members will receive unlimited funding for defense and up to $2 million in civil liability coverage.
Thousands of proud USCCA members have gone through this exact experience. The USCCA has paid out more in legal fees and civil settlements than all of its competitors combined.
The USCCA isn’t just about insurance — it’s about preparation. That’s why we’re proud to be the national leader in self-defense education and training.
Recently, two USCCA members stopped a church shooting in Michigan. THIS is what the USCCA is all about. We make our country a better place by helping to create protectors and defenders like these two heroes in Michigan!
The USCCA is not perfect. But we are principled. We are a God-fearing organization built on the timeless truths of natural law, individual liberty, and personal responsibility. We were created to protect the protectors — and we will never be deterred from that mission by opportunists who mock our values and misuse tragedy for views.
Let me remind every American — and every member, employee, instructor, attorney, partner of the USCCA — of a powerful truth:
Evil doesn’t rest. But neither do the good people who are willing to stand against it.
We’ve built a network of thousands of certified firearms instructors nationwide and a legal team of over 1,000 attorneys ready to support our members in the moments that matter most.
We’ve learned a lot along the way. And we’ve built something stronger and smarter because of it.
The USCCA stands for responsible armed citizens who want to do what’s right and be protected when they do. We’ll never stop working to serve and protect those who refuse to be victims.
God bless you. And God bless the United States of America.

Kayla Giles Update & How USCCA Works Today
Statement from Tim Schmidt,
Co-Founder & Chairman of the USCCA:
Statement from Tim Schmidt, Co-Founder & Chairman of the USCCA:
To our members, instructors, partners, and the broader 2A community:
For over 20 years, the USCCA has stood for one clear purpose: to help responsible gun owners be prepared to protect themselves and their loved ones—and to stand beside them when it matters most.
Every once in a while, a moment comes along that forces you to pause, pray, and reflect deeply on what you truly stand for—not just as a business, but as a human being.
For me, the case of Kayla Giles is one of those moments.
In 2018, Ms. Giles was involved in a fatal shooting during a custody exchange and called us for help. At the time, our former insurance partner provided $50,000 to help fund her legal defense. But as new evidence emerged and legal complexities unfolded, they made the decision to stop that support based on the terms of the policy in place at the time of her incident.
This was one of the key reasons we made the decision to switch insurance companies in 2020.
Seven years ago, our product looked very different. Coverage wasn’t based on whether an attorney believed the case was self-defense or whether a judge agreed to hear it. That’s how our policy works now - because we have consistently updated USCCA Membership based on feedback from our members, self-defense experts, attorneys, and the community.
Ms. Giles was later convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison.
Fast forward to today: The Louisiana Supreme Court has vacated that conviction because they found that the trial may not have been fair due to the instructions given to the jury.
And more importantly—they acknowledged that there is still a legal argument for self-defense.
Let that sink in. No matter what you believe about this case, whether it’s convenient or not, the highest court in Louisiana says there’s still a chance Ms. Giles acted in self-defense.
That ruling caused us to revisit a seven-year-old decision and take a hard look in the mirror.
Almost three years after the recently overturned conviction, I recorded and released a video defending the decision to discontinue support. In that video, I stated that Ms. Giles had premeditated this event based on the evidence presented during her trial.
That video was a mistake. I was reacting from a place of defensiveness and pride – a place of wanting to defend my people – but the video was in poor taste and I regret it.
And for that, I am truly sorry.
I have written a letter to apologize to Ms. Giles personally for that mistake, and to explain to her that if she was a member today, her case would be covered until a final, unappealable decision.
That letter is a commitment to humility and to both personal and professional growth–values I strive to live by.
Over the last seven years, we’ve grown. We’ve learned. And we’ve changed.
Today, under our current policy, if a member is facing criminal charges and their attorney believes it was a case of self-defense—and a judge agrees to hear the case—our insurance company will stand with that member through the entire legal process.
Furthermore, we’ve made significant improvements to our membership benefits—including increasing civil damages coverage to $2 million.
If Ms. Giles’ case happened today, she would receive full support from beginning to end. That means her court of appeals attorney would have been paid. And her attorney fees for petitioning the Supreme Court for review, and her fees for the new trial…all would have been covered.
And so, with that in mind, we are choosing to act—with the full power of the USCCA’s resources—to help ensure that Ms. Giles receives a fair trial.
Let me be clear: we are NOT saying Ms.Giles is guilty or innocent. That’s not up to us.
What we are saying is that she deserves a fair trial—not in the court of public opinion, but in a court of law.
We are doing this because our mission—and our values—demand it. Every American deserves justice and the founding principle of innocence until proven guilty.
We are joining the effort to ensure Ms.Giles receives a fair retrial.
We are offering support—financial, legal, and strategic—to the criminal defense team of Ms.Giles’ choice. We are prepared to offer the full benefits of today’s USCCA membership—benefits that are significantly stronger than those in 2018.
You are the reason we exist. And I want you to know this:
We’re not perfect. But we are principled. And we will never stop fighting to be better—for you, for the people we serve, and for the country we love.
This decision is about people.
It’s about a woman who did not receive a fair trial.
It’s about standing up for justice regardless of public opinion.
It’s about being the kind of organization that walks its talk—even when that walk leads us through uncomfortable places.
As a man of faith, I believe the USCCA has a responsibility not just to protect freedom—but to do so with humility, strength, and clear purpose.
Thank you for trusting us. Thank you for walking this road with us. And thank you for believing, as I do, that courage means standing for what’s right… especially when it’s hard.
With gratitude and resolve,
